Undercurrent News: Greenpeace, Whole Foods, others urge inclusion of Taiwan on forced labor list

Greenpeace USA, Whole Foods Market and the AFL-CIO are among 24 organizations to have asked the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) to stop excluding distant water fishing nations, including Taiwan, from its biennial list of goods from countries that use forced labor to catch fish on the high seas.

Greenpeace Southeast Asia last week released a report, called “Seabound“, that suggests ongoing forced labor risks on Taiwanese longline fishing vessels and a recruitment system in Indonesia “traps migrant fishers in horrific conditions in remote corners of the world”

The list of signatories on the letter also includes Human Rights Watch, the Environmental Justice Foundation, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Fish Wise and the International Pole & Line Foundation.
